Finding Comfort & Inspiration Through Music

When I awoke in London on the morning of the opening for the Pause Conscious Fashion event that I had traveled halfway across the world in which to participate, I was nervous and anxious. How would Vivid Element be received?  What would the show be like?  What am I even doing?

Amazingly these words played in my head “Love is like an energy, rushing inside of me…my death defying love for you… the power of love, a force from above…” –lyrics from Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s 1984 song “The Power of Love.” I felt soothed and able to embrace what the day would bring. Face the fear and do it anyway, as the saying goes.

Previously in my studio back in Portland, I’d been listening to my old cassette tapes from the 1980’s on a tape player my dad had recently gifted me, singing along and dancing to the lyrics of my youth while cutting and sewing dresses.  I rediscovered a love for the British band Frankie Goes to Hollywood and have listened to that tape over and over ever since. I’m still playing those old tapes which give me much joy, even now during the global pandemic when we are all experiencing so many emotions and an uncertain future. I also keep reminding myself, isn’t the future always uncertain?

Lately I’m finding even more inspiration, meaning and solace from this song and its amazing, beautiful lyrics. I hope you will find some comfort and joy in it as well.

“The Power of Love” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Feels like fire
I’m so in love with you
Dreams are like angels
They keep bad at bay-bad at bay
Love is the light
Scaring darkness away-yeah

I’m so in love with you
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

I’ll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
When the chips are down I’ll be around
With my undying, death-defying
Love for you

Envy will hurt itself
Let yourself be beautiful
Sparkling love, flowers
And pearls and pretty girls
Love is like an energy
Rushin’ rushin’ inside of me

This time we go sublime
Lovers entwine-divine divine
Love is danger, love is pleasure
Love is pure-the only treasure

I’m so in love with you
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
The power of love
A force from above
A sky-scraping dove

Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

I’ll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door

“The Power of Love” was written by Holly Johnson, Peter Gill, Mark O’Toole and Brian Nash, four of five members of the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The song is from their debut album Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

“I always felt like ‘The Power of Love’ was the record that would save me in this life…There is a biblical aspect to its spirituality and passion; the fact that love is the only thing that matters in the end.”
