I’m still playing with all my fabric scraps over I’m still playing with all my fabric scraps over here, and now you can too. I just added a special selection of organic knit remnants to the website for all of your diy projects and zero waste collages. I love using every beautiful tiny piece, yet I have a few too many!
I found a bit of peace in nature over the weekend. I found a bit of peace in nature over the weekend. All that happened last week is a lot to process. Insurrection at the White House fueled by the president. The clear disparity of police response to this event when compared to the response to peaceful protests last summer. (94% racial justice events were peaceful.) The event last week was no protest, it was domestic terrorism by homegrown white supremacists.

I want to just hide away and ignore it all. But we can’t do that. Here are a few ways I’ve thought of to take some action. Can you add to the list?

1. Call or email your congress people. Their job is to represent us. Let them know how you are feeling or how you want them to vote tomorrow 1/13/2021 about impeachment. I feel lucky in that my calls and letters are often thanking my senators and representatives. That’s important too!

2. Look into your local government. A lot of change can happen locally, and you can have a voice. When is the next budget meeting? What issues do you want them to focus on? Call, email or write them.

3. Read a book about racism, white supremacy or American history. There are tons of great reading lists. Educate yourself.

4. Listen to a podcast from a black voice.

5. Do something to help those in need in your community. Donate food or warm clothing, check on a neighbor, volunteer or donate.

6. Look up groups that are working to help those in need in your community or who are working in the racial justice movement. Follow and support them however you can. Here in Portland I like @dontshootpdx @brownhopeorg

7. Work to create the world you want to live in! You can’t do it all. What can you do to express your best self and help build a brighter future?
I’ve been unearthing all kinds of treasures in m I’ve been unearthing all kinds of treasures in my ongoing studio clean out, including this gem from 1989! 80’s style is close to my heart.

Want to make your own sweet vest or a jacket with shoulder pads? Find this pattern and a few others listed in Vivid Element’s Etsy shop. I’ll be adding more sewing supplies and vintage pieces throughout the week.
I’m sorting remnants today as I clean out my stu I’m sorting remnants today as I clean out my studio for the new year. It’s really hard to get rid of even the smallest pieces when you see value and beauty in everything! I get a huge thrill from using up my tiniest of scraps, and I’ve created many designs to be able to incorporate them. In fact my business name, Vivid Element, stands for seeing the beauty and importance of the small, whether that’s an act, thing or person. We are all connected and part of nature’s cycle, and what you do and who you are really matters.

I’m a zero waste enthusiast and throw away very little. There does come a time every year when my piles and boxes and shelves of beautiful hand dyed organic remnants are overflowing. I find homes for the excess by donating through our neighborhood Buy Nothing Group, animal shelters or people on Craigslist. I’ve been saving my tiniest of the tiny pieces to use as stuffing for pet beds or other projects. Nothing is trash!

What do you do with your small fabric scraps?

I’m looking forward to more learning, creating and sharing as I strive to express my vibrant nature in new ways in 2021.✨Are you contemplating any new ways of expressing your true nature for the future?
Happy New Year! Happy New Year!

It may feel like nothing is happening in nature in the winter, but plenty is happening inside and below ground. Nature is resting and preparing a foundation for spring’s new growth. Just like us!
