I’m thrilled to be showing my newest plant paintings at Flour Market Bakery, which is mere blocks from where my subjects grow.

Flora is a list of the plant life of a particular area, period or habitat. These acrylic paintings represent part of the flora of my NE Portland, Oregon native, edible, organic garden.

When you zoom in, you get to view the minutia that is rarely seen. Enjoy an in-depth view into the sublime beauty of magnified flowers and their intricate botany, delicate reproductive parts, richness of color and ingenious design. Connect to place through the depths of nature found in that place. Zoom out and you can connect to the universe from the Alberta neighborhood garden where the plants are growing: in Portland, Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest of the North American continent on planet Earth in the Solar System of the Milky Way Galaxy!

These pieces were painted from live plants with the aid of macro photos I took so I could examine them closely. I also study their botany, edible and medicinal uses, history and beauty, and try to connect to them using all of my senses. Using acrylic paint on locally made wood panels, I painted them while working next to the studio window that overlooks our organic garden where they grow.

This exhibition is part of the Taking. Up. Space. Initiative facilitated by the Artist/Mother and Thrive Networks. Taking Up Space or T.U.S. is a Grassroots Female Focused Community Global Art Exhibition empowering artists to take up more space and exhibit their art in the month of May, 2022. There are over 80 exhibitions taking place this year and Micro Flora is one of them. See more from this initiative by viewing the #takingupspace2022 hashtag on Instagram.

Here’s a link to a short video I created as part of the show: Universe in a Flower.

Enjoy the details!
